This very handsome Derby Bentley sports saloon has elegant pillarless coachwork by Vanden Plas. It was delivered to its first owner, a Miss Durand of Barkston Gardens in London SW5 in February 1937.

The Bentley was the subject of a ground up restoration in 1992 at a reputed cost in excess of £60,000. This included stripping the car to a bare chassis, overhauling the engine with new pistons, inspecting the gearbox and overhauling the clutch.  The woodwork was restored, the interior retrimmed in beige Connolly leather with matching leather-bound Wilton carpets, and the coachwork was repainted in Garnet (an attractive shade of dark maroon).

The most recent owner purchased the Bentley in November 1997, and soon after put it into store with the remainder of his collection. We have recently carried out recommissioning work including: freeing up the braking system, refurbishing the ignition system and fitting a new battery, refurbishing the fuel system including cleaning/sealing the tank and fitting a new fuel pump, replacing a broken valve spring and resetting all tappets, cleaning and machine polishing the bodywork and chrome-work, and greasing and checking the underside.

The car now starts, runs and drives very smoothly, but from a safety perspective needs attention to a seized front brake shaft (which may free up with use), and the wire wheels should be ideally be re-spoked and repainted. Other advisable items include replacing some missing Autolube pipes and the gearchange reverse lock. Unfortunately the Bentley’s paintwork has suffered whilst in storage and ideally it would therefore also benefit from a repaint.

Complete with copies of the original factory build records, some ownership history and a photographic record of the restoration this most elegant example has the potential to provide its next owner with pre-war Bentley motoring at a relatively modest cost.

Previously advertised at £69, 950, the owner is now willing to consider reasonable offers for an early sale.
