The Sports 1000 Series
has been set up as an exciting new venture by the 750
Motor Club.
Sports 1000 is aimed at constructor drivers who want
to either design and build a car from scratch, or to use
one of several kits available to build their own sports-racing
car. Cars can be front or rear engined but must use a
standard BMW 1000 engine and 5-speed sequential gearbox.
These engines are reliable, available, and very cost-effective
and are proven in competition in the ADAC BMW Formel Junior
Cup run in Europe. With 95bhp and a 450kg minimum weight
(including driver), the cars have an impressive power-to-weight
ratio and with control slicks and free aerodynamics, excellent
cornering and handling characteristics. And unlike other
series it is truly low cost. Cars can be built for a reasonable
figure, and costs to run a competitive car are predicted
to be around £4,500 for a season for a driver-entered
car.
Sports 1000 technical regulations are based on those of
750 Formula, with sensible enhancements to cope with the
extra power. They mandate tubular spaceframe chassis,
free suspension, free aerodynamics (subject to certain
overhang and height restrictions) and free brakes. The
idea is to keep the cars simple and allow amateur constructors
to build competitive cars (as is the case in 750 Formula).
The minimum weight will equalise performance across different
chassis, avoids heavier drivers being disadvantaged and
is set at a level to encourage drivers to design competitive
cars without having to compromise safety. Finally, a live
rear axle is mandated to simplify the rear suspension
and drive-train issues.
